Paving a “Pathway” for Student Success

Students face many changes throughout their academic journey. Whether they’re moving from middle school to high school, learning new material or choosing a university and career path, it can be intimidating. The transition sometimes causes students' academic performance to plateau or make it difficult for them to ask for help.

Eighth Grade Pathways at GVSU (GV Pathways) is designed to support students as they grow to facilitate a seamless transition from high school to college.

“We wanted to provide a foundation for students to successfully transition from high school into college,” said Astin Martin, associate director for admissions and recruitment at GVSU. “We partnered with EQPD in December 2023 to provide targeted assistance and address academic support for students through high-impact tutoring and mentoring.”

The GV Pathways program began in 2021 with 24 students but has since grown to 1,400 students from 10 schools and organizations. Martin said families can choose to opt-in to EQPD tutoring and that the service has strengthened the student experience. It has also shown students that it is okay to ask for assistance if they don’t understand something.

“This program has truly supported students through their academic journey to higher education,” Martin said. “Because they have already received tutoring through EQPD, they are less overwhelmed when they walk into the tutoring or writing centers on their college campus.”

One student who took advantage of their mentor relationship was able to identify and work toward a career. Martin said this student was interested in a career in real estate, but didn’t know where to start.

“They worked with their EQPD mentor and utilized campus resources to learn about the experience of being a Grand Valley State University student.” Martin said. “It helped the student feel more comfortable and confident using campus resources.”

Martin’s goal for GV Pathways is to continue improving the program to enhance the student experience and expand the program to more schools across the region.
